All communications with me, and all records relating to the provision of my services will not be released to any other person or organization without permission. However, the law places certain limits on this confidentiality. Everything said in sessions is confidential with the following exceptions:
- I am required to notify the appropriate authorities in cases where I learn about abuse or neglect to a child or other vulnerable persons, like the elderly.
- I am required to notify the appropriate authorities if a client makes serious, credible threats to harm themselves or others.
- Finally, the courts can subpoena the disclosure of records from me.
If any of these situations were to occur, I would discuss the need to break confidentiality with you, if possible, before doing so. Disclosure of information would be limited to the minimum necessary to ensure safety and follow the law.
The collection and storage of client information is in accordance with the personal information protection act (PIPA) and in accordance with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) and the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPC) guidelines.
